App Visibility-The iPhone App Store has literally hundreds of thousands of apps, and every day hundreds more get added. Because of this, simply adding a new app to the store does not provide very much visibility. It may simply sit in the new release section if your lucky for a day or two and then start falling off. All of this is to say, you cannot just count on the App Store advertising for you, you must promote your app elsewhere as well if you want first class app visibility.
If you do not have a website yet, you need to get one. More importantly, you need to promote your app on that website. Remember this is your website so make sure it is presenting your app the way you want customers to view it. It is all under your control.
Another place you need to announce your app is through iPhone App Sites. These are generally divided into two distinct page types. First, App Store scrapers, which essentially just mirror the Apple App Store. You do not have to do anything for scrapper sites, as they tend to work automatically. The second page type is news and product reviews sites. These websites will require you to get in contact with publishers, as most review sites do not have the will power or the time to review every single app that comes out. In order to make sure your app gets reviewed consider sending publications a promo code. Remember though, do not send a promo code unless a reviewer writes you back and requests one. You do not want your codes to go to waste.
Also, remember that Apple grants you only fifty promotional codes for each version of your application. These codes allow individuals to download you application for free from the store. Remember that each code is unique so make sure you keep track of to whom you sent each code. Also, each code is only good for four weeks and only valid in the United States. Therefore, instead of requesting all 50 codes at once, only request the amount you will need for you immediate promotions.
In addition to using promotional codes, consider using a press release, which may get noticed by traditional media such as newspapers, TV shows, and magazines. Do not overlook the power of local media either. If you contact them make sure you tell them that you are a local developer, as local newspapers tend to like these types of stories.
Sometimes it may also be beneficial for prominent app visibility to use paid advertising to promote your application. If you think you have a quality app capable of making a large return on investment do not hesitate to pay for advertising. These types of advertisements when properly implemented can bring in potential customers and boost your app’s ranking and get you unsurpassed app visibility. It is a feedback system that can help your app succeed long after the advertisement runs out.
When choosing where to advertise for the top app visibility remember that not everyone has an iPhone. For instance, it is not worth it to advertise your application on a children’s website as they are not likely buyers of your product. Consider using high flow websites like Facebook or iPhone App Review Sites which have lots of tech saavy visitors who are likely to be interested in your application. Moreover, you can also use imbedded advertisements in other ad-supported apps.
Finally, once you have achieved some success with current customers and have a few apps in the store already, consider targeting your existing users with advertisements. One method to do this would be through a mailing list, but you can also use imbedded newslines or ads that show your current about new and exciting applications.
Remember, promoting your application is equally as important to designing the application. However, with good promotional planning and good implementation your application can achieve great success and you can get top notch app visibility.

Questions Answered on How to Get First Class App Visibility
A question I get all the time is, “Ben, how do I make my app more visible?” So let’s go through some of the fundamental ways you can make your app more visible and get the Top App Visibility. It’s not as hard as you think. It doesn’t cost as much money as you think.
There’s ways to do it cheaply and there’s way to spend money doing it, but you’ve got to look at the benefit of it. If I can get 10,000 or 20,000 people to download my app, what’s that worth to me? Have you monetized your app? If you’re getting people to download your app, how can you make back the money you’re spending on advertising? And, to be honest, one of the ways you may do that is by having ads turned on in your app. You may not always want to have ads turned on, but you may start with that because that’s how you’re paying to run the advertising on the front end to pull people in. Running and having in-app purchases becomes extremely important when you’re creating an app and when you’re advertising your app, providing the best app visibility.
So let’s run through a few ways that you can actually make your app more visible and get First Class App Visibility. Number one: Do you have a website yet? If you don’t have a website, it’s really important for the best app visibility that you do have a website. There’s multiple ways you can do Organic SEO, Pay Per Click SEO, online promotions, banner ads, you can do banner swaps on different websites. All the old ways that you used to actually promote and marketing a website still work for promoting and marketing your app and providing the best app visibility.
If you’re getting a website, make sure it’s mobile compatible. Seriously, why create an app website in Flash that won’t even load on an iPad or a mobile phone. So check. Use a template, use a theme for WordPress or Joomla or something like that. Keep it really simple. It doesn’t have to cost you a lot of money – you can buy templates for as cheap as $6 or $16 on some of these themed websites. You don’t need to be paying a monthly fee for a website as well, so just keep it simple and check it.
If you’ve got a mobile device – which you should have to test your apps – load your website. What does it look like? Is there a link to actually download your apps? You’ll be amazed how many people create these websites for these apps and don’t even give someone a link to download it when they’re interested in downloading their app.
Number two: You can announce your app through iPhone app websites. This is usually divided into categories. So when you actually create your app and you complete the description – and this is iTunes or Android – there’s a lot of websites that actually scrape Apple for that content and they create review websites and links and things like that. So you might find the huge benefits of putting your developer or your URL to your actual website in that so when that content is scraped and put on all these other review websites and content websites out there, that they’ve got a link to actually go and download your app. So for the best app visibility think of doing it that way.
There’s also a lot of news and review websites that scrape other review and media websites that you might want to load content on.For example, if you create a YouTube video about your app and have it key worded and tagged and all the important things that you need to do when you’re optimizing your video, those same strategies apply to when you’re creating and loading your promo video on YouTube.
Put the links in the description and the URL and it’s got to be a full http://www. URL – you actually need to make sure that’s complete. Put that in the description and also put that at the end of the description so if they’re reading it, they can just click the link and go straight to your website or go straight to download your app. So when you’re doing things like that, always make sure you put a full HTTP link in reviews, descriptions, your Facebook posts, anywhere, so you can drive traffic back to your website. Don’t make people have to go and Google your app because if they Google your app something else may show up and they may download that instead.
So what else can we do for the best app visibility? Remember, for every app you publish you get 50 promo codes. These promo codes only last for four weeks at a time and they’re only good in the US, so you can only send them to people who are actually in the US app store. Use your promo codes when you’re getting app reviews and app promotion and things like that done.
If people want to look at your app, particularly media people or anyone doing a review or they might be doing a review on a YouTube channel or a Vimeo channel or they’ve created a video website, they’re doing a video review, don’t make them pay for your app, let them download it for free and review your app. Make it simple. But remember, those codes only last for four weeks and you only get 50 of them so don’t just waste them.
One of the other things for optimal app visibility is remember you can use paid advertising and promotion. And there’s now a lot of companies coming up that will do custom acquisition for games if you’ve got a game and different apps as well. So you can use those strategies, but bear in mind that may cost several hundred or several thousand dollars to set up and get working. What you really need to know is what it’s worth to acquire a customer? And what can I pay to actually acquire that customer? How much are they going to spend when they’re in the game or using the app or the upgrades? How are you going to make that money back? That’s really what you need to work out regarding your app visibility.
When you’re choosing to advertise for optimal app visibility, remember not everyone has an iPhone. For example, if you’ve got a children’s app, are you marketing to kids or are you marketing to the parents? How are you marketing to the parents? There are other ways to market and promote to the kids, but you’ve got to be aware of this, not everyone has an iPhone to download it. You might have to market to people who are using an iPad or an iPod. How do you do that? Different bands, music, different websites. Once again, market to parents or be featured somewhere for the greatest app visibility.
But always remember the organic optimization in the app stores. The app stores themself are a search engine, so what key words do you have with your app? Here’s a point you may not be aware of: You can change your app name once you’ve got it published, but to do that you’ve got to submit an update to the app. So you’re going to need your coder to actually submit an update to the app and you can change your name.
Sometimes long names are good for app visibility because you can put the key words that people are going to search for into a long name. So you might see some apps in the app store have really long names – they’ve got 10 or 12 key words in their name. Also, what key words do you have with the app itself? You can only, once again, change when you update the app, so you might want to put in there Angry Birds or Doodle Jump or some of the other top games or top utilities or top things in your category, so when I search for Facebook maybe, you can have your app show up. Would that help you get some extra traffic?
These are all different things you can optimize for the best app visibility. Put testimonials and different things into the app description themself. There’s a whole heap of ways that I’ve just listed and some of them are contained in this blogpost, there’s a whole heap more coming, and there’s other blogposts that all have to do with the topic of app visibility. So put your comments and ideas and feedback below. What are you doing to get your app noticed? What are you struggling with to get your app noticed? And I’ll quite certainly create some videos, let you know what we’re doing, what we’re working on, what other people I know are working on and what’s working for them.
This is Ben Bressington, thanks for checking out this blogpost and this video, put your comments and feedback below and I look forward to hearing from your and finding out what’s working for you and how you’re making more money from your apps.
