To make your app a success, you must first make it seen!

In just over four years the word ‘app’ has gone from being pretty much meaningless to be a household name. Indeed, with millions of mobile applications available for not just the iPhone but also Android, Symbian, and other handsets, there is no question that the mobile revolution is in full swing. And because we have nearly 4 billion people worldwide accessing the Internet remotely every single day, the market for mobile advertising is very real. If so far you have overlooked this revolution, fear not, it is not too late to get a piece of mobile revolution pie. But just in case you are not sold yet, consider the following benefits to mobile advertising:

You can reach a worldwide audience of four billion people and target based on region

You can connect with consumers by using devises they already own

You can extend your brand awareness into the mobile medium

Now that you should be chomping at the bit to get involved, it is important that before you start mobile advertising you need to consider a few things. Here are six helpful tips to take into consideration before you start you campaign.

What is your App target audience?

You know the type of person you want to reach, now consider their demographic and geographic features. By taking into consideration such things as geographic region, age, gender, wealth, etcetera you will be able to better target content to potential customers.

Is your App campaign engaging?

You want to make sure that you banner campaign is engaging and that your mobile site is conversational. Remember, mobile users are immune to most techniques trying to gain their attention. Consider using a mobile advertising agency to help make sure you audience sees your campaign.

Where do you want to advertise your App?

You want to make sure that you advertisement is compatible with the devises the users you trying reach are already using. This means iPhones, Blackberries, Android and any other handset.

How much are you willing to spend advertising your app?

You can pay as little as fifty dollars to fifty thousand dollars on an online campaign. Decide how much you want to spend and then figure out how to best implement your plan.

How long are you looking to advertise for?

It is very important that you come up with a schedule for your mobile advertising campaign. Again, consider using an agency to help you come up with the best distribution and length of time that your campaign should run. Much like all other media, mobile advertising have peak usage time.

Do not forget to promote your app campaign!

There is nothing wrong with using other media to promote your advertising campaign. Consider using social networks and other PR channels to increase attention. You can never have too much advertising.

Mobile advertising can be incredibly lucrative for your company. Indeed, some companies have seen 600% increases in their market share after starting a mobile marketing campaign.

The book How to Make Millions with Apps will share with you the secrets of how you can create apps with no programming, coding, or design experience. I’ll even share with you the little-known secret of how you can create apps for free. This and so much more.

I’ve even included over $128 worth of free bonuses and resources that include my app creation blueprint. This is what I use and it’s what I’ve built my entire app business on. And I’ll share with you a little secret – I’ve got over 150 apps in my app portfolio and it’s growing on multiple platforms every single month. And all this with no programming, coding or design experience.

And you might be thinking, “Hey, I’ve got a really limited budget.” I can share with you how to capitalize on your limited budget and publish an app that makes money. So if you really want to know these secrets, How to Make Millions with Apps is the book that’s going to expose all these secrets and make it so simple for you to succeed at creating an app.

~*~

Six ways to make your app a winner

Here’s some little secrets and tips you need to be aware of to make your app work. So you’re either at the stage where you’ve got an idea or you’ve just published an app, and you’re looking out there going, “Okay, how can I get downloads? How can I make sure I get a return on all the time and money I’ve spent creating an app?” So here’s six simple ways. They sound simple, they may be simple, but I tell you what, a lot of people forget these fundamental basics.

Just because there’s 4 billion people a day accessing mobile devices, doesn’t mean they’re going to know about your app, doesn’t mean they’re going to find out about your app. You’ve now got to take the time and the energy to make sure they can even find your app. Make it as easy as possible for people to actually download your app. So here’s some things to be aware of – here’s six points. And if I’m looking down it’s because I’m looking at my iPad and it’s got all my notes on it – that’s how cool an iPad is.

Number 1: What is your app target audience? This is one big thing that people forget. Who do you want to download your app? Not everyone is going to be interested in your app. If you’ve created a game, what similar games have they played that they would like your style or type of app? Is it a strategy game? If I’ve played other strategy games, would I want to download and play this game? Or do people who play this type of strategy game like this type of utility? There’s a lot of demographics information you can find out about what different game players like or what other similar types of apps they may have on their device.

When I was running my marketing companies, we always used to create an avatar of our ideal users. We would create a personality, a profile, of what type of apps they liked, what magazines they read, where did they go on Facebook, if they even used Facebook, what websites did they use, did they use LinkedIn, what did they browse for online, what movies did they watch, what clothes did they wear?

You might be going, “What the hell does all this have to do with my target market?” Well, what it does is it helps you think about what other ways you can engage with your target market and your audience because that’s important. If you know your app user is out on Facebook and they’ve liked Tony Hawke, for example – that’s a skateboarder if you don’t know who that is – then that’s going to help you reach them and get your message to that audience.

Or if they follow a particular type of political view or a certain type of humor. You might find that people who like a certain type of comedy movies love downloading your apps and love engaging and playing with your apps or using your utilities – then market to them. You need to really be aware of demographic information.

You might be saying, “Hey, look Ben, I’ve got no idea where to start.” Sometimes just by testing and making some of this stuff up. So I think if they like horror movies they may like my zombie game. Well, let’s test it, let’s find out. If they like romantic comedies, do they like your zombie game? Let’s find out. Start working out what they do.

You might even think you’ve created a utility. For example, this person has just downloaded a new phone and their looking for – let’s use a flashlight app as an example of a utility. They’ve just downloaded their phone, so you might want to target people who have just recently acquired a mobile device in the last three months because they’re looking at downloading new apps and they’re more addicted to downloading more apps.

You might want to target to people, do key word research, or show up on websites outside of the app ecosystems that are talking about great tools for app users, great utility apps, the six best utility apps when travelling or for business travelers. It might have the flashlight or you might be talking about a camera app. You might even market to people who are looking at camera utilities or camera apps or camera resources – “Free app to download and try.” There’s multiple ways where you can pull things in. The more you know about this audience and this target market the better it’s going to be, and to be honest, the easier it’s going to be for you to target.

They say 80% of advertising is wasted and what you want to work out is what part of that 80%. If it’s not worth marketing to people under 18, why are you marketing and promoting to people under 18? Why are you putting your content on those websites? That’s something you want to look at.

Number 2: Is your app campaign engaging? App campaigns can be completely multimedia, multidimensional. Create video, create engaging images and pictures, use music, use sound effects, create the emotion. Now if you don’t have the budget to create a promotional video? That’s not true: you do. You can create great promotional videos just by using words in Keynote or PowerPoint or great images with some good music. It’s very easy.

You create a story, you create something emotional. You can use simple, free services online like Animoto.com – it’s a great photo creating tool that combines and creates promo videos. You could outsource it and say, “I’ve got $75.00 or $150.00 to create a promotional video for my app.” Download it, create an engaging campaign, you have to get people’s interest. Remember, you’re one of 1,000 ads or enticements they’re going to see during the day. What’s making yours memorable? How are you making it easy for them to download?

Number 3: Where do you want to advertise your app? Number three really ties in to number one because if you know who you’re audience are, and even if you’re making some of this up until you can test it and get some data from your analytics that you’re using in your apps to refine it, see who’s actually downloading and using and how long they’re using. Once you know who they are you know where to market.

You can target forums, news websites, you can target Facebook or LinkedIn or the different websites and social media websites in different countries. Are you targeting a Brazilian or Spanish or European marketplace? Or are you targeting a specific language only? Or a specific age group? Older men like this app, or older middle-aged women, or you want to target young kids and what age demographics and you can work out where to promote.

And one of the things you really want to think about is cross-promotion. Where are these people already now? So if I’m aged 21 and I love horror movies, for example, where am I going online, what magazines am I reading, what news posts, am I even reading the news? You’re great theme and seasonal period where you’d get in is when a new zombie movie comes out. So how could you tie your app and promotional marketing campaign into other things that are already getting media attention? For example, the Twilight movie release or nowadays The Hunger Games is coming out, how could you tie your app, your utility, whatever you’re creating into that media attention that’s already there, those people that are already searching? That’s what you really want to start thinking about: Where are the people I’m already targeting?

Number 4: How much are you willing to spend on your advertising? This is a good question because one of things you’ve really got to be aware of is if you have a low budget you need to do a lot of these things for free. So I’d recommend doing things like review article submissions or creating articles like the top five promotional apps for business, the top five apps for business travelers, or the top five apps for people gaming, or putting your key words into that, making sure you app gets submitted to review websites, creating promotional videos, getting video feedback and testimonial videos of people using your app and rating your app, and saying, “Yeah, I love to do this.” And you can use that on social media. You can do a lot of things for free.

If you can spend say $2,000 on an advertising campaign you can start looking at maybe doing paid banner promotions, or you want to do a Facebook like campaign. One of the things you can work out is for every dollar I spend, how many downloads do I get? And if you’re really doing the maths you can work out for every download I get, how many sales do I get? And this is what matters.

One of things you’ve got to work out is what is your cost to acquire a customer? What can you spend to actually acquire a customer and make it profitable because you actually want to make this advertising dollar a loss leader. So you can work out, say, for every $2,000 I’m spending I’m making $2,500 or $10,000 – this is what you want to work out, and if you can work that out you can just keep spending money after money.

It’s not how much you want to spend on it, it’s what can you spend to acquire a customer, that’s the most important metric. And once you know that you can find hundreds of ways to spend that money. One of the other things I didn’t mention previously is that with your new website, create a website you can build links to because people still search online, they’re searching from their mobile devices for XYZ app. So think about how would I be searching for that style of app?

Number six: Do not forget to promote your app campaign. So there’s already an existing stream of media and promotional campaigns that are already happening. How can you tie that in to those existing news and media campaigns? You’re starting to see nowadays on morning TV, news shows, radio shows, or DJ shows they’re interviewing app publishers. They’re talking about apps they’re playing right now on their mobile devices.

What can you tie your app into to get media attention? Sometimes just promoting a press release online is enough to get that attention. Sometimes you actually need to create a press release that goes online and offline. Or sometimes you want to maybe contact some magazines and see if you could get featured or if they could write a story on you. It’s all
possible and sometimes all you’ve got to do is ask.

A lot of people aren’t taking the time to actually think about marketing and promoting their app and who’s interested, but more importantly, making your app promotion interesting. How could you run a competition or a giveaway, or create t-shirts or stickers, or anything like that to help engage an audience and take them from this virtual world to the real world where you can put something in their hands. Competitions, giveaways, and prizes are wonderful for this, and there’s a lot of companies, services, and products out there already that you can tie your app into. A lot of big name brand companies are looking for apps and things they can use in promotional giveaways and prizes. Use them. There’s also other apps you can cross-promote with. So when you start really working out who your audience is, you’ll find that it actually gets easier to promote and market your app.

There’s six ways that you can ensure that your app is a winner, and I’m pretty certain that if you actually think of these six ways to make your app a winner during the publishing and while you’re creating your app, you’ll actually make your app even better for the people you’re actually targeting. So that’s the six ways. Put your comments below, give us your feedback, and let’s create a discussion in helping people think of other ways that they can promote and market their apps. This is Ben from HowToMakeMillionWithApps.com and I look forward to seeing you on one of my other blogposts.

// ]]>

App Visibility-The iPhone App Store has literally hundreds of thousands of apps, and every day hundreds more get added. Because of this, simply adding a new app to the store does not provide very much visibility. It may simply sit in the new release section if your lucky for a day or two and then start falling off. All of this is to say, you cannot just count on the App Store advertising for you, you must promote your app elsewhere as well if you want first class app visibility.

If you do not have a website yet, you need to get one. More importantly, you need to promote your app on that website. Remember this is your website so make sure it is presenting your app the way you want customers to view it. It is all under your control.

Another place you need to announce your app is through iPhone App Sites. These are generally divided into two distinct page types. First, App Store scrapers, which essentially just mirror the Apple App Store. You do not have to do anything for scrapper sites, as they tend to work automatically. The second page type is news and product reviews sites. These websites will require you to get in contact with publishers, as most review sites do not have the will power or the time to review every single app that comes out. In order to make sure your app gets reviewed consider sending publications a promo code. Remember though, do not send a promo code unless a reviewer writes you back and requests one. You do not want your codes to go to waste.

Also, remember that Apple grants you only fifty promotional codes for each version of your application. These codes allow individuals to download you application for free from the store. Remember that each code is unique so make sure you keep track of to whom you sent each code. Also, each code is only good for four weeks and only valid in the United States. Therefore, instead of requesting all 50 codes at once, only request the amount you will need for you immediate promotions.

In addition to using promotional codes, consider using a press release, which may get noticed by traditional media such as newspapers, TV shows, and magazines. Do not overlook the power of local media either. If you contact them make sure you tell them that you are a local developer, as local newspapers tend to like these types of stories.

Sometimes it may also be beneficial for prominent app visibility to use paid advertising to promote your application. If you think you have a quality app capable of making a large return on investment do not hesitate to pay for advertising. These types of advertisements when properly implemented can bring in potential customers and boost your app’s ranking and get you unsurpassed app visibility. It is a feedback system that can help your app succeed long after the advertisement runs out.

When choosing where to advertise for the top app visibility remember that not everyone has an iPhone. For instance, it is not worth it to advertise your application on a children’s website as they are not likely buyers of your product. Consider using high flow websites like Facebook or iPhone App Review Sites which have lots of tech saavy visitors who are likely to be interested in your application. Moreover, you can also use imbedded advertisements in other ad-supported apps.

Finally, once you have achieved some success with current customers and have a few apps in the store already, consider targeting your existing users with advertisements. One method to do this would be through a mailing list, but you can also use imbedded newslines or ads that show your current about new and exciting applications.

Remember, promoting your application is equally as important to designing the application. However, with good promotional planning and good implementation your application can achieve great success and you can get top notch app visibility.

Questions Answered on How to Get First Class App Visibility

A question I get all the time is, “Ben, how do I make my app more visible?” So let’s go through some of the fundamental ways you can make your app more visible and get the Top App Visibility. It’s not as hard as you think. It doesn’t cost as much money as you think.

There’s ways to do it cheaply and there’s way to spend money doing it, but you’ve got to look at the benefit of it. If I can get 10,000 or 20,000 people to download my app, what’s that worth to me? Have you monetized your app? If you’re getting people to download your app, how can you make back the money you’re spending on advertising? And, to be honest, one of the ways you may do that is by having ads turned on in your app. You may not always want to have ads turned on, but you may start with that because that’s how you’re paying to run the advertising on the front end to pull people in. Running and having in-app purchases becomes extremely important when you’re creating an app and when you’re advertising your app, providing the best app visibility.

So let’s run through a few ways that you can actually make your app more visible and get First Class App Visibility. Number one: Do you have a website yet? If you don’t have a website, it’s really important for the best app visibility that you do have a website. There’s multiple ways you can do Organic SEO, Pay Per Click SEO, online promotions, banner ads, you can do banner swaps on different websites. All the old ways that you used to actually promote and marketing a website still work for promoting and marketing your app and providing the best app visibility.

If you’re getting a website, make sure it’s mobile compatible. Seriously, why create an app website in Flash that won’t even load on an iPad or a mobile phone. So check. Use a template, use a theme for WordPress or Joomla or something like that. Keep it really simple. It doesn’t have to cost you a lot of money – you can buy templates for as cheap as $6 or $16 on some of these themed websites. You don’t need to be paying a monthly fee for a website as well, so just keep it simple and check it.

If you’ve got a mobile device – which you should have to test your apps – load your website. What does it look like? Is there a link to actually download your apps? You’ll be amazed how many people create these websites for these apps and don’t even give someone a link to download it when they’re interested in downloading their app.

Number two: You can announce your app through iPhone app websites. This is usually divided into categories. So when you actually create your app and you complete the description – and this is iTunes or Android – there’s a lot of websites that actually scrape Apple for that content and they create review websites and links and things like that. So you might find the huge benefits of putting your developer or your URL to your actual website in that so when that content is scraped and put on all these other review websites and content websites out there, that they’ve got a link to actually go and download your app. So for the best app visibility think of doing it that way.

There’s also a lot of news and review websites that scrape other review and media websites that you might want to load content on.For example, if you create a YouTube video about your app and have it key worded and tagged and all the important things that you need to do when you’re optimizing your video, those same strategies apply to when you’re creating and loading your promo video on YouTube.

Put the links in the description and the URL and it’s got to be a full http://www. URL – you actually need to make sure that’s complete. Put that in the description and also put that at the end of the description so if they’re reading it, they can just click the link and go straight to your website or go straight to download your app. So when you’re doing things like that, always make sure you put a full HTTP link in reviews, descriptions, your Facebook posts, anywhere, so you can drive traffic back to your website. Don’t make people have to go and Google your app because if they Google your app something else may show up and they may download that instead.

So what else can we do for the best app visibility? Remember, for every app you publish you get 50 promo codes. These promo codes only last for four weeks at a time and they’re only good in the US, so you can only send them to people who are actually in the US app store. Use your promo codes when you’re getting app reviews and app promotion and things like that done.

If people want to look at your app, particularly media people or anyone doing a review or they might be doing a review on a YouTube channel or a Vimeo channel or they’ve created a video website, they’re doing a video review, don’t make them pay for your app, let them download it for free and review your app. Make it simple. But remember, those codes only last for four weeks and you only get 50 of them so don’t just waste them.

One of the other things for optimal app visibility is remember you can use paid advertising and promotion. And there’s now a lot of companies coming up that will do custom acquisition for games if you’ve got a game and different apps as well. So you can use those strategies, but bear in mind that may cost several hundred or several thousand dollars to set up and get working. What you really need to know is what it’s worth to acquire a customer? And what can I pay to actually acquire that customer? How much are they going to spend when they’re in the game or using the app or the upgrades? How are you going to make that money back? That’s really what you need to work out regarding your app visibility.

When you’re choosing to advertise for optimal app visibility, remember not everyone has an iPhone. For example, if you’ve got a children’s app, are you marketing to kids or are you marketing to the parents? How are you marketing to the parents? There are other ways to market and promote to the kids, but you’ve got to be aware of this, not everyone has an iPhone to download it. You might have to market to people who are using an iPad or an iPod. How do you do that? Different bands, music, different websites. Once again, market to parents or be featured somewhere for the greatest app visibility.

But always remember the organic optimization in the app stores. The app stores themself are a search engine, so what key words do you have with your app? Here’s a point you may not be aware of: You can change your app name once you’ve got it published, but to do that you’ve got to submit an update to the app. So you’re going to need your coder to actually submit an update to the app and you can change your name.

Sometimes long names are good for app visibility because you can put the key words that people are going to search for into a long name. So you might see some apps in the app store have really long names – they’ve got 10 or 12 key words in their name. Also, what key words do you have with the app itself? You can only, once again, change when you update the app, so you might want to put in there Angry Birds or Doodle Jump or some of the other top games or top utilities or top things in your category, so when I search for Facebook maybe, you can have your app show up. Would that help you get some extra traffic?

These are all different things you can optimize for the best app visibility. Put testimonials and different things into the app description themself. There’s a whole heap of ways that I’ve just listed and some of them are contained in this blogpost, there’s a whole heap more coming, and there’s other blogposts that all have to do with the topic of app visibility. So put your comments and ideas and feedback below. What are you doing to get your app noticed? What are you struggling with to get your app noticed? And I’ll quite certainly create some videos, let you know what we’re doing, what we’re working on, what other people I know are working on and what’s working for them.

This is Ben Bressington, thanks for checking out this blogpost and this video, put your comments and feedback below and I look forward to hearing from your and finding out what’s working for you and how you’re making more money from your apps.

38. Professional Phones
This is similar to point 26. You want to make sure that if customers call your company you have things in place like voice mail and on-hold messaging to make sure they understand you are selling a quality product. Also, consider changing your on-hold message to include information about the new application.

39. Design and Utilize Banners
Banners including information about your application can be used to promote your app at a given trade show or even within your establishment.

40. Text-Messaging
More and more people are no longer even using the telephone feature of their phones and are simply using SMS text messaging. Consider utilizing a targeted text-message campaign to promote your app.

41. Digg
Submitting an article or video regarding your app to Digg.com will appear in “Upcoming Stories” where members can easily find it and spread the word of your app if they like it. If enough people ‘digg’ your app, it will move to the homepage thus further promoting your app.

42. Free Classifieds
It can be advantageous to promote your application through free classifieds like Craigslist or even the PennySaver.

43. Party!
No, not a crazy booze filled night of debauchery (though it could be if you wanted). Rather, I am talking about an app launch party that invites friends, associates, customers and prospects. Consider including a cake that has a picture of your app icon on it to push promotion.

44. Design Images
Use your Icon to make wallpapers and backgrounds for people to use on their online networks and on various web pages.

45. Shipping and Wrapping Paper
Consider making customer shipping and wrapping paper that are decorated with your app icon. Use this when shipping products or when wrapping party favors at your launch party.

46. Candy!
People love candy. You can capitalize on this by making promotional cell phone shaped mint tins with your app information on it.

47. Auto-Response
Update your company auto-response email to include promotional information about your new app.

48. Location-Based Social Media
Integrate into your app the ability to use social media apps that reveal people nearby with similar interests or who are also using your application. One such app is called Loopt.

49. Image Projection
Image projection, yes using light to project your image against an indoor our outdoor wall, can be incredibly effective as it is huge and very visible for everyone to see.

50. Update Company Directories
If you have a large number of company employees and surrogates, make sure to send out an email updating them on the application.

50 Fun Ways to Market Your App

~*~

So here’s 50 ways that you can increase the visibility of your app and get some great marketing exposure because you’ve created an app, now you want to get visibility, you want to get marketing, you want to get downloads of your apps and that’s what matters. When you start getting downloads you can start increasing the revenue that your app makes.

So here’s a short list of 50 ways you can do it. Some of them sound crazy, some of them may sound simple but think of it – How can you actually use them in your marketing and in what you’re doing? How can you make it unique? So let’s run through this list quickly and 50 ideas, see what’s going to work for you.

1. The Top 100 – What can get your app to the Top 100? And you might start thinking, “Well, look, what I know right now is that getting into the US Top 100, Top 25, Top 10 charts is good, but it’s a very expensive marketing campaign if you’re doing offer walls, incentivize, downloads, if you’re buying banner impressions. It can be very expensive to get in there, but if you get into countries like Germany or Australia or the United Kingdom that have a lot of influence in what happens in the US, it’s much, much cheaper. Something worth checking out.

2. The other one is get your app reviewed. Get publicity and exposure on app review sites. See if you can get in magazines and newspapers or even on TV. Every morning there’s people talking about apps on radio and on TV.

3. Establish some type of public relations – You can submit press releases online. Wrap your press releases and media around something. So around a story or around a topic – tips for kids or education or business travelers or stay-at-home mums. Wrap it around an emotional story that is news-worthy. So all the traditional things that apply to marketing and PR marketing apply to doing a press release. You can do press releases online and offline. So there’s plenty on that – I’m sure we could talk about this for ages.

4. Here’s something that some people have done well is they’ve used unique postage stamps and given them to companies and other people for free to use their postage stamps of their app or they’ve used them in promotional purposes. So think outside the box. Think about, “What could I do to build a brand and create an identity and create something that engages people?” And postage stamps, beer coasters – you’ll be amazed at what you can use.

5. Promotional ads with other applications – You can use promotional ads, be it images or videos, with other applications. There’s already people who are marketing to your marketplace that you can jump on the back of and partner with.

6. The AddThis button is a great social media button that you can actually integrate into your apps for people to share either your websites or share your app – they can share it on Facebook, share it on Twitter. This does drive traffic. You’ve got to make it rewarding and engaging and worth sharing. There’s a few great apps like Temple Run now that are rewarding people to share to Facebook or to Tweet, so you might want to incorporate a reward mechanism with your app if people share it.

7. Target your advertizing – This is so important. Not everyone with an iPad or an iPhone or an Android device is going to download your app. Who are the people who are going to download your app? Who would want to download your app? Find that out and only market directly to them. The more you can filter out and segment your list the better it’s going to be for you.

8. Promote your application with current customers – So there’s already people who have downloaded similar apps that you can cross-promote with or they’ve got apps or software or something offline or online. How can you jump into that pool?

[9. Participate in Question and Answer Forums.]

10. Marketing via email – Email marketing still works. Yes, the deliverability and read rates are much lower than they used to be, but you can still do targeted media buyers and media lists to email marketing, and create a fun campaign that’s going to be engaging and give people a reason to click.

11. Strategic pricing – You might have a strategy to actually create a premium product or you might go into the Marketplace and sell it at $0.99 and then drop the price for a weekend or a week or a special. That will cause a influx of downloads and there’s multiple ways that impacts it. We’ll come back to that in another video.

12. Make a presentation – That’s right, you can create presentations and PDFs and videos that you can syndicate online so people searching for similar apps or your type of app topic, your app can show up therefore causing downloads. This media really helps.

Let’s run through some of these really quick.

13. Launch sponsorship.

14. Integrate sharing tools, social media, rewards sharing.

15. Integrate Twitter.

16. Exclusive content – Give people bonuses like wallpapers, videos, music, ringtones. These things are easy to create; this exclusive content really helps.

17. Mobile barcoding – QR codes work. See how you can use it.

18. Update your app every 2-3 weeks at least – This is very important. Push something great, push new content, push new in-app purchases, push a whole heap of good quality content. Plus fix the bugs and the issues with your apps – this will let your community know and the people that are currently downloading your app know that you’re actually improving it. They see version numbers are changing and you’ve posted fix notices, they’ll support you.

19. Collaborate with others – Very, very important. Mastermind with other app developers. Collaborate with your audience on Facebook, Twitter. Get out there and start talking.

20. Online networks – We all get invited to a different social media network or friend network every single day in our inbox. Start using that. Who could you network and promote with?

21. Search directories – There are so many ways that people search for apps online and just search for content. Make sure your stuff’s listed. The traditional SEO matters.

22. Use your blog.

23. Facebook fans.

24. Two versions of the app – Create a free version and a paid version. The free version will be downloaded ten times more than a paid version.

[25. Optimize Search Engine Rankings.]

So if these aren’t giving you any ideas and a whole task list of work to do, you’re not paying attention and you’re not really thinking.

26. Professional email – Take this seriously. Yes, you can use your Gmail account but also have professional emails, have it branded. Don’t have the email when you’re doing promotional marketing coming from sexdude51 or drinksonthebeach@gmail.com; people won’t take you seriously. At least have some credibility. Make this a business.

27. A new website.

28. Create a mailing list – Always have a subscribe, a register button, or you can create lists now on Facebook or Twitter. Create a list so you can communicate with people when you want.

29. Video campaign – My favorite. Video is over 50% of all search content and this is where people are going, this is what the trends are. Create videos, simple videos, raw videos, promo videos, do video marketing. And I’m sure we’ll do a video just on, “What the hell is video marketing?”

30. Ad-sponsored applications – AdMob and other ad networks will allow you to run sponsorship campaigns. There’s Free App a Day campaigns. So many ways you can get sponsorship in other apps or on websites, on forums, just keeps going.

31. LinkedIn

32. Forums – Forums are massive. There’s people there talking and engaging and then there’s more people coming and reading what these people are talking and engaging about. So have your ads there, have your content there, get in that conversation. People are already talking, so get in the conversation.

[33. Paid Marketing.]

34. Use current resources – If you have existing [cell sheets] or resources, use them, provide them with people, let other people use them to share your apps and about your business and your story. Create stuff about you and your developer story.

35. Direct snail mail – Direct mail works and actually has a very high conversion rate in comparison to email; it’s actually better than email nowadays, and we don’t actually get much direct mail anymore. There are ways you can use it. There are people you can target by running this promotional campaign. The ad costs a little bit more and it’s not as instant as an email, but it can get some great exposure.

36. Promotional goods – What novelties, T-shirts, mugs, pens, cards, et cetera can you actually create to use in promotion or have other people give away for you.

37. Always be talking about your app – Tell everyone, share it, let people download it, play it, have demo devices that people can engage with. It’s going to work in your favor. Here’s a tip – video those people using your promotional stuff, talking about your stuff; they’ll get other people wanting to be using your app.

38. Professional phones – This is similar to point 26. If you allow customers to actually call your office and talk to somebody, and some people say, “Yes, do this,” and some people say, “No, don’t do this,” but I like to have the professional approach and I like to talk to people on the phone. Because it could be media people calling me on the phone or calling my office on the phone, it could be customers who have got an issue or got a problem or giving us great feedback. So set up a professional phone service and it could be as simple as using Skype. Skype is great or there are some other services like RingCentral so you don’t have to have a phone – you could be in the coffee shop or have the calls forwarded to your mobile or cell phone and you can answer it anywhere in the world. There’s great services, but if you’re going to provide it, let people talk and connect with you.

39. Design and utilize banners – Banners are big. So different banner graphics and make sure you have them animated and static options, but there’s plenty of tips we can talk about later in another video on that one as well.

40. Text messaging.

41. Using Digg.

42. Using free classifieds – This is another search engine optimization strategy. All the classified websites out there; there is hundreds of thousands of them that provide the links and people are there like Kijiji or in the US Craigslist or you might even want to put stuff on eBay or you might want to see even what you can post on Amazon if you’re getting merchandise. It helps people get exposure.

43. Party – Throw a party at app marketing events or Game Developers Conference or Inside Social Apps or Facebook Conferences. Every big company nowadays has conferences and events, and you’ll be quite surprised that you can actually go to these events and they’re looking for someone to sponsor just the alcohol or food component and therefore you contribute to the party with the gaming audience or a utilities audience who want to download it. If you’re targeting doctors and medical professionals, go to those type of conferences, sponsor the bar or sponsor something, get talking, have a few promotional stuff there – you’ll be amazed at what happens.

[44. Design images.]

[45. Shipping and wrapping paper.]

46. Candy – People love candy. There’s great ways you can get your logo, your brand, your image put onto candy be it chocolate or in the wrappers and stuff you can send to people as a gift, use at conferences and events, be it just mints even if you want to really cheap out and go those really nasty mints you have at events, you can do that. People love promotional freebies and let them entice it. If you’re going to be using them, see if you can put a QR code or something on there so people can scan the box or the wrapper and download your app. Great way to do it.

[47. Auto-response.]

[48. Location-based social media.]

[49. Image projection.]

50. Update company directories – So have your company/business information listed everywhere so people can find you and engage with you. And update all the directories to say these are your apps, these are the games you’ve got, these are the utilities you’ve got, and you’ll be amazed the people searching then go, “Wow! I didn’t realize they were doing this. I thought he was just doing this in his bedroom, now he’s got a big business.” Look bigger than you are and it can also help, or have a great story and it can also help.

So there’s our list of 50. We didn’t touch on all of them in detail and some of them we just skimmed through, but you should have at least a whole heap of ideas on how you can now get more marketing and exposure and visibility to your app. Yeah, some of them are going to cost a few dollars, some of them are free, some of them are time. What you need to work out now is where and how are you going to spend your time in creating marketing and exposure for your apps.

Additional Tips on Marketing Your App

This is one of the things that you don’t have to do – you can employ people to do. Create a six month plan, put a few things in place, track, see what works for you, and you’ll be able to make it all happen and over time you’re going to see results and get success. So don’t dismiss everything straight away – sometimes the craziest things or the things that you think are completely stupid work the best.

Pricing Your App for Success

You have finished making the next groundbreaking iOS application, time to celebrate right? Wrong. Now comes an equally important next step: pricing your application for success. The current iPhone app price is currently around $2.85 and many developers even undercut that price and sell their product at $.99. Choosing how to best price your app is critical to its success, and one should not approach it as some sort of a guessing game. Rather, if you take the time to answer the next few questions you will be on your way to maximizing your app’s success.

What are you competitors charging?

Unless your application is 100% unique, chances are there are competitors already in the app store. Take a look and see what they are charging as this can be a great starting point when deciding how much to charge for you app.

What makes your app different from others?

Your app is likely at least somewhat unique and for this reason it is important to pinpoint what makes yours special. Does it have better graphics? Integrated features? Better controls? By figuring out what features of your application are unique you can better understand your app’s value.

Where does your app stand in the market?

You application is likely a best fit for a specific type of consumer. Picture this consumer and then find out specific data on them. Are you trying to sell to college in a particular region? Look up how many students there are and how you can best reach them.

What are your development costs?

This question is very important to ask yourself when you are choosing to price your app because it exists in a direct relation to your current finances. Remember, this is just the amount of money you have spent, but also how much time you have put into the application.

How much does it cost to have your app developed by another company?

Finally, realize that some large firms can create applications much more efficiently than smaller firms because they already have staff developers and graphic designers. It may be worth it in some cases, for instance a video game, to have some of your own development costs outsourced to a larger firm.

After you have considered all of these questions, you are now ready to start deciding how much to charge for you application in order to make sure its successful. Now is when you need to do some soul searching, and figure out how you gauge your own success – does it mean generating twenty thousand dollars on an app that costs five thousand to produce, or does it mean generating one hundred thousand dollars on an app that costs twenty thousand to produce.

Take for instance an app for which you charge a very common $.99, minus of course Apple’s 30% fee, you would need to generate nearly twenty-nine thousand downloads in order to earn twenty thousand dollars, or nearly one hundred fifty thousand to earn one hundred thousand dollars. That is a lot of downloads to achieve, and we have not even taken into consideration development costs. Consider for instance that you spent five thousand on development, and that you think you could sell one hundred $.99 apps a day, that would take you seventy days to break even on you investment.

To help you understand, take a look at the following chart:

The above chart shows that instead of aiming for the bottom of the barrel, it may be worthwhile to charge a little more for you app at the beginning and then monitor the results. Try maybe $1.99 so you have room to move up or down considering what type of results you are seeing. App developers take different approaches regarding promotions as well. Some developers see that lowering their price has an upward effect on sales, others have seen no effect whatsoever. For this reason, it would be to your benefit to experiment with different price points that make sense considering the research you have completed on your competition.

Remember, some apps sell for well more than $.99 and you should not be afraid to price your app higher. Indeed, if your application is truly unique there is no reason not to charge a premium. However, people are never willing to pay for poorly designed apps and making sure your application is a good value at any price is critical to its success.

Pricing Your App for Success

What You Need to Know about Pricing Your App

“Yeah, I’ve just spent the last month, two months, six months developing my app and it’s done. I’m just going to put it in the app store and just sit back and make my millions.” Well, I’ve got some bad news for you – that’s not necessarily going to happen. You’re just starting the work, the marketing, the localization which is translation to other languages. The work’s just really beginning and you’ve reached a milestone but now let’s talk about pricing.

The biggest evolution from 2010 to 2012 was the impact of freemium and free content. So a lot of the top apps were going free and having a micro-payment system, in-app purchases and ads built into them. If you’re going the freemium model, free apps have a completely different revenue strategy and business model to paid apps, so don’t think if you go unpaid you’re limiting yourself. But I always recommend creating a free version and a paid version and running them together and using different promotions or different pricing strategy than the paid version.

There’s many ways that that helps you and you’ll be amazed at the revenue differences, the pricing differences there and how it really impacts your bottom line. But you’ve really got to choose carefully – free and paid – and if you’re going paid you can create multiple paid versions of the app and just because your competition are selling it for $1.99 or $2.99 doesn’t mean you’ve got to come in at $1.99. You’ll be amazed at how that $1.00 makes a big difference in price.

But also, if you’ve got paid apps make sure you have in-app purchases, and whatever you do start increasing the price of your in-app purchases. Just having them all for $0.99 is crazy. There’s some apps that have in-app purchases for over $400. So get your in-app purchases up, double the price of your in-app purchases, create bundles, create unique pieces, create things that are $4.00, $2.00, $10.00, $19.00, $29.00 coin packages – you’ll be amazed at how people want them. Give them a one-time offer to buy a few items at a premium price where they save a few dollars. All that other type of marketing that’s applied everywhere else in the world still applies to revenue and marketing strategies.

But here’s a few good questions when we’re talking about pricing strategies:
What are your competitors charging?
Be aware of it, don’t undercut them, and use it to your advantage. You might want to create a $2.99 version and then a $9.99 version because the reality is when you have a $9.99 version you are attracting a totally different customer than the $2.00 and the free one. So bear that in mind – there is always, always going to be people who are free and they’re never going to be paid, and some of the research that’s coming out now is it takes people to use your app 8-12 times before they’re actually going to spend any money with your in-app purchases. Then there’s that other demographic and that other audience that if you offer it to them straight away they’re going to buy it.

A buyer is a buyer is a buyer, and they’re actually what we call “whales.” We actually want to cater to the whales more than we necessarily cater to the free people. The free people help get more exposure and things, but the whales which are the people spending money, and the percentage of them spending big money are the ones that pay for further app development, pay the mortgage, pay the price on the fancy car, the fancy house, and everything else. So if you really want to make good money learn how to attract whales and what whales are spending money on.

What makes your app different from others?
And this is one of the things when you’re in the initial stages you want to factor into your pricing strategy and work that out. What are your features and benefits and how can you put that into all your marketing? But make sure your customers understand that from the get-go. And this might be something you want to factor into your logo design and your promotional graphics so you can really get your message across when other people are looking. If I’m just comparing your app to your competitor and all I’m seeing is the logo and the title, you might want to change the name of your app to include more, use a longer title. Little things like this help.

Where does your app stand in the Marketplace?
This is, once again, finding your best customer and getting the fit.
What are your development costs?
How many apps do you have to sell to cover your development costs? Have you even worked that out? Have you thought about that? What’s the difference between $1.99 or free or $0.99 and $4.99? It’s a dramatic difference in sales to cover your development costs for you to break even because remember you’ve got development costs, marketing costs, net profit, and profit. This is what you really want to work out and work out what this next six months, the next twelve months of your app lifecycle is really going to be like.

So on this post we’ve got a table that explains the profits that you’re getting because you might be selling your app for $0.99 but you don’t get the $0.99 – you’re only getting $0.70 out of that because Apple’s taking their $0.30. So work that out; you’ve got to factor that in to the effect. You’ve also got refunds, and how refund works with Apple and Android are all slightly different, but you’ve got to factor in there’s going to be a percent of people who you’re never going to make happy, and even for $0.99 they’re going to want a refund which is crazy.

So here are some great questions and topics that you can factor into your pricing strategies and you’ve got to start working out what the hell is your pricing and marketing strategy? And don’t just go cheaper. If you’re just competing on price you’re absolutely crazy because there’s some great promotions you can do.

For example here’s one of them, here’s a tip that I give to some of my top-paying consulting clients: Set your app out at $2.99 or $3.99, put it out there for a few weeks, get some downloads. It will get indexed and crawled on all the websites online. You can then drop the price to free or $0.99 for a weekend or something and you’ll get a spike in downloads because your app price changes be indexed by all the app review websites and saying, “This app’s now on sale! This app’s now on sale!” You can do press releases that reinforce your app being on sale. Sometimes you don’t want to compete with the free market – that’s why you create a free app that has a completely different strategy so you can cater for that.

And remember, having a free app with its own unique revenue strategy means you don’t have to decrease the price of your paid app to compete, and that’s what a lot of people do wrong. They take a great paying app which doesn’t have a great in-app purchase model or ad revenue model or anything in it and make it free to try and compete with their competitors. That’s a big, big mistake. You’ve got to have a paid app revenue strategy; you’ve got to have a free app revenue strategy. And bear in mind your free app will always have ten times the amount of downloads than your paid app.

Marketing Your iPhone App – Sink or Swim

If you want your application to succeed in the blooming market of iOS devises, it is important that you not simply throw it into the App store and let it sink or swim. Rather, it is paramount that you market your application using a number of techniques to make sure that your hard work pays off. Below I have outlined a few common techniques to help you market your iPhone app.

One of the most important tools to secure the success of your iPhone app is by pricing it competitively. Although you may think that the only way to get your app noticed it to make it $.99 that is simply not true. For instance, if you distribute many new products consider discounting them periodically, and if you have your app already at very low price consider making it free for a short period of time. If you do this however, it affects the way your customer views the application. If you are trying to make a more premium brand image, consider selling the iPhone app at a higher price and delivering frequent updates.

Although securing market penetration is important, remember that you need to be able to make money off your application. Few business models are viable with $.99 applications, and it may be worth it to secure ad-support for you application. One option could be to have a free version of the application be limited and ad-supported and then have a full version without ads for a premium. These types of strategies can be highly effective in getting your app noticed.

Also, remember that people do not want to pay for a sloppy or incomplete application. Accordingly, all of your marketing materials should be professional looking and polished. Consumers judge iPhone apps by the product name, icon, screenshots, and description, and projecting a sense of quality can be a very effective way to gain the trust of consumers. Because this is so important, consider doing small focus groups to get an idea of what consumers are likely to respond to. This will give a better idea of how to market your application.

Listening to consumer feedback can also help you better market your application and achieve greater success. One way to do this is to figure out how consumers actually use your application. What is the first thing they click on? Do they get frustrated with specific aspects of it? Do they have to close the iPhone app to gain access to other apps that should be seamlessly integrated? By answering these questions, you can make the user experience better and thus make your application more desirable.

Finally, because Apple has loosened its grip on the App store market, there are many new business models available. You may want to consider using micropayments rather than just upfront payments to maximize business. Remember, by improving your product and marketing it effectively, you increase the user base and subsequently the success of your application.

Your iPhone App-How to Market Your App

So you’ve spent the last few months, weeks, or even hours working on your iPhone app and you’re publishing it to the app store and you’re like, “Yes!” But this is really now when you’re going to sink or swim to give you the bad news. This part and how you publish your iPhone app is really critical and it’s really going to determine how successful your iPhone app becomes and how much of a learning curve and how much more effort you have to put in to make your app successful. So publishing an iPhone app is sink or swim and because you’re watching this video and because you’re here and searching for this stuff, I can tell you you’re in the 10% of the Marketplace because there’s a lot of people out there who are publishing crap. There are a lot of people out there who are publishing crap apps that are never going to make any money, it’s a hobby for them, or it’s an ego thing.

They can tell their buddies at the bar, “Yeah, I published an iPhone app; I’ve got an iPhone app in there.” When they check it out 10 people have downloaded it. Right?! There’s all that type of stuff and the reality is there’s a small market segment who are taking this thing seriously and they’re making real money from this. There’s some companies out there that are just young, smart kids, smart teens and they’re getting millions or tens of millions or hundreds of millions of downloads. And they’re not the Angry Birds, they’re the other type of apps – they’re social apps, social games, there’s smarter apps. You might be quite financially significant with several millions downloads on your iPhone app per year. Divide that over the months and just work out what’s going on. So this is sink or swim. This is really the time when you’ve got to work out, “Hold on, either I’m going to take this seriously or I’m just going to throw away all the time and money I’ve invested in publishing my iPhone app.

If you’re going to take it seriously you’re in the right spot because this is where you’re going to be able to get some great information and it may be THE information you need to turn your iPhone app into a profitable success. So when you’re publishing, look at the title. Look at the keywords you’re putting in the title. What are you using in the title? And start using longer descriptions because your titles really impact search. Do some testing before you publish your iPhone app on your icon. Start showing people, “Hey, what do you think of this? What does this mean to you? Would you download something that looked like this?” And you might be surprised that you love this icon or you’ve just had someone slap together an icon for you – it matters. It is the only thing that people will see about your iPhone app and they’re deciding to download your app on the basis of your icon. So make it fun. You’re going to have to test. Bear in mind to test your icon you may have to create updates to your iPhone app from time to time.

One of the other things you want to test is keywords and when you’re updating your iPhone app is the only time when you can change the name of your iPhone app and the keywords of your iPhone app. So what keywords are putting in there? What are the other top apps in your space, in your niche, that other people are already downloading? What are they searching for? Would you get more downloads if you put “photo” or “camera” as a keyword so when someone looks for a camera app your iPhone app will show up in the keywords? One of the other things you can really think about is is your iPhone app free? Make sure “free” is in the title. And if your iPhone app is free put “free” as a keyword because people are actually searching on iTunes “free strategy app,” “free word game app,” so make sure you’ve got that in your title. Make sure you’ve got it as a keyword. Really think about the keywords because remember, say to yourself, “Sink or swim?” What do you want to do? Do you want to get your money back or not?

One of the other points we’ve got here is whatever you do, push out quality. It might take you an extra week or two weeks to finish getting out the bugs or the issues but really get quality. You don’t know who’s downloading your iPhone app, you don’t know who’s reviewing your iPhone app, and if they can give you good reviews they can drive great traffic and really help you out, so push out quality and your developer account and your developer business will be worth more because you’ve got quality apps. And you might create a scale of apps – some of the apps I publish personally and in our developer accounts by myself and clients they vary on a scale. We’ve got some low quality apps that we use for what we call our “traffic apps” that are getting us a lot of traffic, but we’ve also got our high quality apps and our games we spend three or six months on and tens of thousands of dollars. I built a social gaming engine which has cost a lot of money – a lot of money! – and it’s taken us over a year to build. But it’s the game that runs our entire social app platform and all our social apps, so now I can create social apps like games like Tap Zoo and Words With Friends.

That’s what a social game is, these big multiplayer games, I can create those apps in about three months which is great because traditionally they take 8-12 months to build. So you really want to think about quality, systemization, what can you automate. “If I spend an extra two weeks now, how can it help me with the next iPhone app or the iPhone app after that or where I want to go in the long-run?” And sometimes it’s worth the time and the money to do it because it makes a massive big difference. I know with what our social game strategy is right now, we’re going to have at least 25 apps by the end of 2012 – that’s our goal and objective. Most companies can’t achieve that. They look at that and go, “Whoa!” There’s some companies that it’s taken two years – two years! – to build one social app, so that’s certainly not one to be us. So work out what you can do now to improve it. Always create quality, look at your keywords, look at your pricing, but right now it’s sink or swim.

How are you going to make your iPhone app succeed? What are you going to do? Have you got analytics in your iPhone app? Are you tracking events? What are they doing in your iPhone app? How are they spending their time? What are they buying? When do they purchase – at what point? Is it on the 3rd, 5th, 10th, 12th load? Why is it on the 12th load? Don’t they trust you? Do they think your iPhone app sucks? Are they just loading your iPhone app and looking at the first screen going, “Ugh.”? Does your menu screen really suck? Does the gameplay suck? What about the help? Do you have help instructions? Are you teaching me how to use your iPhone app? You really need to teach people within the first install or the first few sessions.

Give people tips, tricks on how to install and use your iPhone app. And get them using because it’s your job to get them using and get them addicted. So that’s a whole heap of tips, a whole heap of good stuff that we’ve just gone through in this video, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. We’ve got hours of content on this website – we’ve got conversations, there’s hour-long videos, there’s complete training courses which some of them have got over 100 hours of content that we’ve got here, we’ve got personalized consulting and coaching that the team here at How to Make Millions with Apps and Tigga Studios can help you with. So if you want to get successful, you can create a plan to get your iPhone app successful or you can just steal all the free content and look at what we’re doing to make money from our apps. You choose what you want to do, but at the end of the day it’s going to take you a little bit of time and a little bit of energy to make your app successful. So it’s sink or swim time – my question to you is: What the hell are you going to do?

Selling Your App

Imagine winning a beauty pageant in which there are fifty thousand other beautiful competitors. That is a pretty good glimpse of what it’s like to be the number one app in the iPhone app store. Except of course, that if being the number one application can be incredibly lucrative. Thus, designing and selling your killer app can mean lots and lots of money.

Despite Apple’s historic negative relationship with outside developers, getting access into the iPhone market is relatively easy. Indeed, it costs only $99 dollars for the software development kit, and as of October Apple no longer uses the antiquated and unpopular nondisclosure requirement. And once your application is complete, the process moves very quickly. According to Apple, 96% of apps are approved within seven days.

All of this may sound like great news, and it is; however, the hard part comes once your app is already in the store. If you want to start making the big bucks you need to make sure that iOS users notice your application in the vast sea of other application. Because of how easy it is to get apps into the store, competition is fierce and has driven the market price of an app down to $1.99 or less. Because of this, it is important that you sell lots of your app if you want to make any money.

The way to make sure that legions of iPhone users discover and, more importantly, download your app has everything to do with marketing. Consider researching your potential market. For instance, what type of person do you think would be interested in your app? How many of these people own iOS devices? Answering these questions can help you understand how to effectively market your application. Additionally, if you are working with a small budge, one very effective option is to submit your app to one of the many iOS application review websites.

Of course, sometimes a good app can market itself. That is, the most popular applications utilize the iPhone’s unique features (touch screen, GPS, accelerometer) in new and exciting ways. If you can make your application fun to use, addictive, and impressive, it can mean the difference between obscurity and hundreds of thousands of dollars.

So if you really want to know these secrets, How to Make Millions with Apps is the book that’s going to expose all these secrets and make it so simple for you to succeed at creating an app.

~*~

Creating and Selling Your App

So this video is all about selling your app. So you’ve got an app – now what? Let me tell you a story. Creating a successful app is like winning a beauty pageant – there’s a whole heap of people who wish they could be in the pageant and they never get off the couch; there’s the people who enter that never had a chance of winning; then there’s those people that really, really work at it, that Top 10, and they keep working at it and it’s like the same ones keep winning it all the time.

That is what it is like to be in the Apple App Store or the iOS Store or the Android Kindle Marketplace. Those that keep working at it succeed. Those that really take it serious and don’t treat this like this stay-at-home business, this biz opportunity, don’t treat it seriously, they treat it like, “Yeah, I just made it in my bedroom on a weekend and I published my app and, man, that was it!” Yeah, well, that’s a myth and a story and that is not what happens.

A lot of people who succeed in creating top apps on iPhone or Android or even on the HTML5 or even Facebook – they put a lot of work into it. They take it seriously, they run it like a business, and as a result they get paid like a business. If you really want to make millions of dollars or hundreds of thousands of dollars of even thousands of dollars, if that’s what you want to make, treat this seriously and it really is possible. If you want to treat this
like a hobby I can guarantee it’s going to cost you a bucket load of money – not a little bit of money, but a bucket load of money – because you’ll make mistake after mistake and you don’t really care. You’ll spend months developing an app that you never release.

So creating great apps is like winning a beauty pageant. Sometimes you’re never going to win the pageant, but just because you’re in the Top 10 of the beauty pageant and you just keep working at it, you succeed and you make a lot of money. Plus if you look at your portfolio of apps, so not just creating one app, creating multiple apps, and they’re all Top 10 hotties, you’re actually going to be successful. And that’s what’s important because when you can take the average of your entire app portfolio, you’re creating a lot of money and you’ve got successful apps and you’ve got apps that are getting downloaded every time. Don’t think you’re going to create the next Angry Birds; if you’re going after it that way, it’s not going to happen.

One of the other things, if you’re actually creating a game or even if you’re creating a utility, and you’re going after it specifically to create money, the quality of your app is not going to be the same as if you’re really going after it to create an addictive app, a great app, a great game. The games and the apps that are making the most money are the most fun, they’re the most easy to use. They put so much energy into making them work and making them be successful, and it’s that attention to detail that makes them successful.

So if you want to create a successful app: attention to detail; treat this as a serious business; create a company registration account so the possibility of selling your app portfolio, your apps, to a bigger company that wants to buy you out is a lot easier and a lot more possible because you’re a company. Plus you’ve got all the other benefits that I’m sure your accountant will talk to you when you’re actually getting paid money.

So the point really is treat this seriously. Creating an app and taking it seriously right now is going to be really good. This is like creating websites back in 2000. What’s going to happen over the next few months or few years with this app as the app goldrush explodes, you’re going to be riding this wave all the way to the bank. So the only way you’re going to take this seriously and make money from apps is to put in the time and energy to learn.

I always tell people, “Your first app may not be successful. It may be something you love and you’re so passionate about it; it might be like your first-born child, but sometimes you’ve just got to give up on it and move on to the second or the third because that’s where all the potential is.” You’ve worked out all the bugs. And we’ve all got stories where we spent 10,000+ hours and we spent $15,000 on this app or more, and it didn’t make it. That’s really the reality. Sometimes you’ve got to know when you’re flogging a dead horse and move on to the next one. Take the lessons you’ve learned.

So that’s why I tell people, “This is your first app you’re publishing – publish fast.” Get it into the app store within 30 days. Understand what it’s like to get it into the app store. Get some keyword ranking. Get some downloads with iOS, Android, Kindle. Understand the customer support. Understand the bug issues and fixing bugs, and each platform has its own quirks with that. Understand what it’s like to set up your advertising and get paid for that.

Test your app on your actual device and go, “That’s either really great or damn, that sucks! I could do this, we could change the screen here, we could make the buttons better, we could put a lot more attention into the graphics and detail and start creating award winners.” Start creating those beauty queens that are going to win the beauty pageant. Start looking at it that way. Put time in, put energy in, create a few apps that get your experience, get you testing things. You’ve got to test stuff. You’ve got to look at other apps; look at the Top 25, Top 50 apps. What are they doing? What’s working? Why are those apps addictive? Why is everybody talking about them? And if you can find that out, you’re going to understand what it takes to create a beauty queen.

If you don’t want to put all that time and energy in and you just want to be able to buy the beauty queen – other people call that some dirty words, but it is possible. You can buy great apps. We can fast-track your success. I can share with you what we’ve been doing and what other people have been doing and why they’re successful and how they’re successful, so you can really get a jumpstart on creating great apps. I know one of the resources we provide is actually we provide people with source codes to apps that they can buy so they can get into the Marketplace even faster.

So if you want that type of stuff or if you’re looking for a turnkey portfolio solution, we can certainly help you out. HowToMakeMillionsWithApps.com or TiggaStudios.com we can help you out, really be successful. Put your comments and questions below. // ]]>
If you are reading this it is likely that you believe you have a great idea for an iPhone app and are looking to get into the app market. In fact, maybe it’s one that could make you a millionaire. But before the dollars start rolling in you need to make sure you understand the smart phone app market. Thus, below I have outlined the estimated sales that can be expected from any given app.

The Facts

- There are 45 million iPhones and iPod Touch Users in the app market

- Over those 45 million, 54% are in the United States

- iPhones represent 68% of worldwide devises running iOS and iPod touch make up the rest in the app market

- However, only 75% of iOS users download applications (most of which are free) in the app market

- The most popular apps that cost money reach only 3% of users in the app market

- The United States has approximately 300 million people, and using the above numbers we can assume that about 8% of the US population owns an iOS devise

Using the Facts

These types of numbers are very telling about the market for your app, and you can use them to better understand your app’s potential. For instance, if we were trying to understand the app market for an application that kept track of New York subways we would want to know a few things. First, we could find out that in 2008 there were five million weekday riders and 3 million Saturday riders. The Saturday numbers are probably more effective to use as it takes into account New York residents as opposed to commuters. However, neither number takes into account unique riders, and because there are 8 million residents of New York City our market size is likely somewhere in between the Weekday and Saturday numbers; approximately 6 million.

Of course, New Yorkers are for likely to use technology than say someone in the Midwest, so we could accurately assume that slightly more than 8% own an iOS devise; for the sake of discussion we’ll assume 10%. Thus, if we have 6 million subway riders, 10% of whom own an iOS devise, that equals six hundred thousand potential users in the app market.

Remember though, that not every single one of these potential users are going to buy your app. Rather, it is about only 3% of users that will pay for even the most popular application. For instance, Firemint’s ‘Flight Control’ one of the best selling paid applications of all time. However, the sales to date equal only 1.4 million. Taken from 45 million Apple devises, this represents the average of 3%.

If we look back at our example of a New York subway application, 3% of the six million potential buys comes out to about 18,000 apps sold. You can then start to think about the price of the application. Most data suggests that 75% of people willing to pay $.99 would also be willing to pay $1.99 or $2.99. Therefore, 75% of 18,000 realistic buyers at around this price range equates to about $27,000- $40,000.

To conclude, remember that although that the app market for iOS devises is constantly growing (in their latest quarter apple sold 8 million devises!), Blackberry’s outsell iPhones every day. If you can design your application to work on both iOS and Blackberry devises you can increase your app market share immensely, and of course, the amount of money you see on the other end.

iPhone App Market Sizing

The book How to Make Millions with Apps will share with you the secrets of how you can create apps with no programming, coding, or design experience. I’ll even share with you the little-known secret of how you can create apps for free. This and so much more.

~*~

What You Need to Know about App Market Sizing

So what is this post, the iPhone app market sizing, this is the last guide you’re ever going to need, about? Is the app market worth it? Is the iPhone market, iPad market, Android market, Kindle market worth it? If you’re thinking about creating an app and you’re thinking that you could make money from apps, the answer is yes, but I would prefer that you wait 6-12 months to maybe five years to actually do something about your idea because the longer you wait to actually create an app the more money I make and the easier it is for me to do other things. Because if you don’t, to be honest, get off your backside and go and create an app and get into the app market now, as soon as possible, at the start of this goldrush, you’re really going to be missing out.

So if you’re thinking about creating an app – do it! It’s really simple; it’s not that hard. I’ve even got blueprints and trainings that show you step by step, and I’ve got programs where we walk you through exactly what you do, we’ve got things to fast-track your success, you’ve got all the tools and resources you need here. It’s actually not that hard to create an app – it’s a lot of fun. So really, do it.

The problem with these stats that I’m about to give you is that they’re old. The app market is getting so big. Let me explain why. The evolution of computers are getting smaller; everyone loves mobile. These tablets, like iPads, mobile devices, get used more every day than desktop machines. There’s countries out there that are skipping the entire desktop revolution and they’re going mobile. Look at the impact of tablets in schools. What do you think kids who are under 10 years of age are going to be using when they graduate? They’re not going to be using laptops. The businesses that they go into are not going to be using big desktop computers. They’re going to be walking around with tablets or their mobile phone and doing everything off their smartphones. So this app market is just going to be massive.

The iOS app store has had 25 billion – that’s with a “b”, billion, and for those that aren’t sure or have lived under a rock for the last few years, that’s a bucket load, that’s a lot of people – 25 billion app downloads and it’s still going. And they’re only a tiny part of the app marketplace because when you look at the app system as an entire ecosystem, iPhone is not that big in some countries. Android is actually bigger, Nokia is actually bigger, the Windows phone is going to be competing.

But then let me tell you a little secret – I’ll lean in and I’ll actually whisper this – because for those that are serious, Amazon, which has got over 200 million credit cards on files, have backed their entire business on the Kindle Fire and producing tablets. Do you think one of the world’s biggest companies, Amazon, would put their entire business behind a mobile strategy where they’re creating hardware and creating digital systems for video, music, movies, and shopping, just on something that’s not going to last.

If you think the app marketplace is not real and not serious you’ve got to slap yourself because you’re kidding yourself. 25 billion apps downloaded in the App Store alone. Nokia signing on to use the Android system which is going to be huge. Android is going to explode in 2012, and I believe it’s going to dominate the app market, and Android and Apple are really going to fisticuffs. Chasing close behind is going to be the entire Amazon movement but it’s really riding the Android wave. And then you’ve got the good old Windows system riding up the behind and it’s still going to be a serious marketplace. You’ve then also got the other phone systems and other networks out there, you’ve still got smartphones, you’ve got their release of HTML5 – which I really believe is a few years off – but you’ve got some massive marketplaces you can capitalize right now that you’ve really got to get into and take this seriously.

For example, there are 45 million iPhones and iPod Touch users in the app market– 45 million! – that you could put your apps onto without much work. Those 45 million people, 54% are in the United States alone. Talk about a closed and captive market – it’s like shooting fish in a barrel. iPhones represent 68% of the worldwide devices running iOS and iPod Touch make up the rest. So that’s a big app market. The app market for iPad has increased substantially and these devices are selling in the tens of millions. This device has transformed tablet computing, and people thought it was a joke to begin with. They’ve just released the iPad 3. The [unsure] is they’re leading the field, billions of dollars are behind this, and you just get to choose.

Do you want to make some money from this, or is it going to be another thing that you look back in five years and go, “I had an idea for an app and I wish I did something about it.” Because there’s nothing that really pisses you off more than you seeing that guy that created that app or that lady – it could be an 80-year-old lady who created that app – she makes money. Or this 16-year-old kid who, from his bedroom, had the same idea as you and created an app, and he’s paid for his education before he’s even graduated. His parents had to co-sign his developer account. It’s just ridiculous right now.

Learn What You Need to Know About Breaking Into the App Market

So there’s some great stats and figures in this blogpost; there’s more around the web. Different countries like China have had a 238% increase in the mobile device downloads. Sweden is one of the highest-paying app developer countries when you publish your apps into that marketplace. Every country has its own ecosystem and different style.

But at the end of the day, what I’m trying to say is, yes, if you get off your arse you can make some money from apps. If you’re willing to put some energy and effort behind it, it can be a bucket load of fun. How many people can really say they get paid to play games? There’s a lot of people who say they get paid to jerk off at work and waste time at work, but seriously, getting paid to create games. It’s a great feeling walking down the street and people have got your app or they’re talking about your app or they’re playing your game. You know what’s even better? When you’re asleep on your bed or you’re spending time with your family on the weekend, people are still downloading your app and you’re still making money. And you come into the office the next day and you go, “I don’t have to do much today and I still got paid,” unlike having to go to work at 9 o’clock in the morning and slave away for the boss. Apps is a great industry; right now it’s a goldrush.

So this video is all about get off your arse, turn your idea into an app as fast as possible. If you want some help and guidance this website’s got it all, or if you’re watching this video somewhere else HowToMakeMillionsWithApps.com can fast-track your success, check out my book, and you’re certainly going to realize the benefits of the app market world. It isn’t that hard, but the longer you think about it the more money those 16-year-old kids and 80-year-old ladies are making that you’re missing out on. Because really over the next few years you can build a massive business for a few thousand dollars. This is just huge.

App portfolios – if you’ve got multiple apps – are worth a lot of money in the app market and plenty of people are wanting to buy them because there’s a lot of people out there that just come up with the ideas, don’t want to put the effort or the energy in, they just want to buy it already done. And that’s already another business strategy for you – if you know how to do it, you can do it over and over and over again; that’s one of the strategies I teach my students. It is possible.

So you’ve now got to make a choice. Are you going to watch this video and do nothing? Or watch this video and take action that can really benefit you long-term. I want to hear about the apps you create or are creating and your app ideas. If you’ve got some ideas and you just want to give them to me, post them in the comments below because I’m quite happy to develop them and make money from them if you’re not going to do it.

Everyone is trying to capitalize on the iPhone app craze, and if you’re reading this you probably have already made (or are trying to make) the next big application. You realize that there is a huge amount of money to be made in this burgeoning business, but beyond posting your app in Apple’s store you may not know exactly what else you can do. Well, fear not, there is lots you can do to get your piece of the app store pie.

If your goal is to make more than just a little extra cash off your application idea, you need to start developing a marketing plan and a sales strategy for you application. For instance, what types of people are going to be interested in your app? How do you make sure that these people will easily understand the value of your application? How might you price the app to make sure it is competitive in the market? All of these are very important questions to ask your self.

Tips for Succesfully Marketing Your App

Marketing an iPhone application is very similar to marketing any other product. Indeed, you can divide it into a few simple steps: first develop a unique product that the customer needs; second, implement a marketing message that will attract potential customers; and lastly, keep creating new products and upgrading old products so you can build loyalty among existing customers. It is important to understand that marketing your app is a process that incorporates all of these aforementioned steps. Once you understand this you will be able to increase the sales of your iPhone application.

Because marketing is so important to the success of your application, I am going to go in depth over four important steps for marketing your application.

4 Steps for Marketing Your App

Step 1: Unique Product
You have already come up with the application idea, you realize that there is a market out there, now it’s time for you understand why your idea is different from the thousands of other applications. Why does someone want your application over someone else’s? To answer this question, ask yourself the following three question:

First, what is unique about your product? Is it the graphics? The sound effects? The networking capabilities? Make a list of these benefits and your on your way to better understanding and thus marketing your product. Second, what type of person is going to buy your application? Are you targeting the gym rat or the business man? The video gamer or the armature chef? Knowing who your audience is will help you target your application appropriately. Finally, what type of competition is your app facing? By understanding your competition you can better differentiate yourself and improve your application chances of success.

Step 2: Deliver Your Specialized Message
The demand for you application is likely already there, so now it is just important to make sure that people are aware of your application. The way you make sure they are aware is by creating a message that connects with them and makes them notice you.

There are many ways to get your audience to recognize your application. You should start by drafting an in-depth descriptions that concisely though powerfully explains your app to your customer. You should then make sure that you get a professional, high-quality screenshot of your app in action. Remember, you are trying to showcase your application to your customers; you need to make it easy for them to see, understand, and purchase your product.

Also, do not forget about social media marketing, as it can be a powerful tool for spreading the word about your application. If people are talking about your app, you are getting free advertising. You should facilitate this type of marketing by developing a Facebook, Twitter, or Myspace page for the app.

Step 3: How Much?
The price at which you set your application is one of the most important factors that will dictate the success or failure of your app. It used to be that pricing an app at $.99 was a sure way to get noticed, but with the influx of thousands of application this strategy has become more and more difficult.

An alternative approach is to study your competition and understand the rate at which they are selling their apps. If your application has better and more sophisticated features, consider pricing your app at a slightly higher rate than the competition. This approach can give you financial room to support your app with discounts and other special promotions. Remember, cheap isn’t always better. Indeed, people will happily pay for quality.

Step 4: Implement the Plan
Once you understand your own product, your competitor’s product, and your target audience, you are ready to implement your marketing plan. This plan does not have to be lengthy and costly, but it does need to outline exactly how you will reach your target audience. That is to say, your marketing plan must include an easy to understand message, outline of your defined customer, promotional materials (including reviews, promotions, and press releases), so that you have a map for success for your application.
Whether you have already completed your application or have yet to even start programming, it is never to late or early to think about how you are going to market your application. Doing so just might make sure your application marketing starts bringing in the big bucks.

be a success!

One of the most important tasks one must accomplish is not simply getting your app into the store, but in getting people to notice it. Here are six easy tips to getting your application noticed.
1. Use Twitter: Twitter can be an incredibly useful tool for getting your app noticed. It allows you to connect with your customers as well as for them to connect with you. Moreover, people with Twitter accounts are inherently tech savvy and are likely users of smart phones.

When using Twitter, make sure to remember that this is a business tool, not a personal news feed. That is, make sure you are connecting with your followers, but not bombarding them with useless information. Doing so will help you remain in contact with your current followers as well as attract new ones.

Finally, because Twitter is an acceptable and widely used social network it may be worthwhile to integrate Twitter into your application. This will allow users to essentially advertise for you and help your app get noticed.
2. Don’t Forget About the Forums: Online forums can be a great place to get your application noticed. This is because developers as well as iPhone users often use forums. By personally connecting with these types of individuals, you are able to create loyalty to your product which can be hightly valued. Indeed, forum users who enjoy are loyal to your application can provide you and your application with free viral advertising.

Check out websites like Touch Arcade and iPhone Dev SDK for useful and heavily used online app forums on.

3. Spread the Word: You may not have any experience in promotion, and that is okay. However, it is very important that you find someone who has some skills in advertising and networking. You can either use someone independently or outsource to a company like Appular, which can find ways to promote your application. Make sure you start early though, as advertisers need time to spread the word through various channels of blogs, journalists, and editors.

4. Secure a Creative Screenshots: People judge books by there cover, it is just a simple fact. Accordingly, they also will judge your application by the screenshot. A creative and high quality screenshot allows your users to know what your product is as well as to let them envisions what it is like to use your product. Moreover, by getting the screenshot out there early, you have easy advertising and promotion for getting your application noticed.

5. Think About What Makes Your App Desirable: This tip is incredibly important because it is what makes your application unique. You designed the app, now you need to identify why people should want to use it over the thousands of other applications. Then widely tout this feature and make it known through the various channels we have already discussed. Try to make it so that as soon as someone sees or reads about your application, they immediately understand why it exists and why they should want it.

6. Listen and Respond to Feedback: One final way to make sure that your application gets noticed is by responding to feedback and updating your application. By making the app better, both users and review websites will take notice. This provides you with more advertising as well as the benefit of having a more desirable app.

For example, check out application in the iPhone store and note how often they are updated. This is because they are striving or relevance and to remain noteworthy. You need to do the same with your app.

These are few simple tips that you can use to get your application noticed. Don’t worry if you are unable to implement them all, however they can all be very useful on the road towards making your app successful.

Do really understand the App Store Eco-System?

Apps stores are an eco-system to themselves constantly evolving and each platforms marketplace is different from the other. The differences in app marketplaces can be vast from differences in user behaviors to how you need to optimize your app within the app store. The app market is also extremely segmented, that there are different apps stores are now available for different mobile apps OS platforms with the android platform having multiple marketplaces.

How To Understand The App Store?

One of the best things that you can do prior to launch or after launch of your app is to spend time in your app stores and look at what displays, why and how, work out the categories and conduct keyword searches and assess the results.

Which apps are always displaying and why?

What can you copy from the app description or keywords, or game titles?

Are their keywords in the app name or how are the app screen shots used to sell the app?

There are many things that you need to understand about your store eco-system before you can optimize your app to receive more downloads.

Just because you have completed the development phase for your app does not mean your app will get the downloads it needs to be a success. There are multiple elements from marketing factors included into the design and build of the app and promotional strategies that can be used to get your app to the Top 25 Download Charts. Most developers fail to get the fundamentals of the app correct and wonder why their apps fail to attract downloads or revenues.

It is always recommended to have a complete research on the apps market before anyone getting involved with it. All the ground works should have done before launching apps in the market. Hundreds and thousands of apps in many different categories are now already in the showcases of different apps market. Yet, more apps are waiting to come, as the consumers are looking forward to have more and more usability through their smart phones. Again, apps of any existing type can also become a good choice if someone can find and add more features within those apps.

How To Assess The App Store

If you take 15 -30mins each day an assess the app store top 50 or the top crossing apps in the app store you will really start to see what is working for apps. If I could suggest one thing study the top grossing apps in the app store at least twice a week…. because these are the apps that are making money either from download purchase or in app purchase (IAP) is this not what you want to do?

Actually take the time and download some of the top grossing apps and study them … dissect them and see how the IAP are working, how are ads running, how are gamification elements being used?

Tip: Just do not do this in the Apple IOS App Store also check out the Amazon Market place that is an App Store too and you will soon see that in 2012 and over the next few year that the Amazon App Stores really start to become profitable and serious contender to the Apple IOS App Stores. An app store that many people do not even think about checking is the Amazon Kindle app store market place, this is really early mover ground but if you are serious about making a living from this you will want to check them out at least once a week. Create a note pad document that you can take notes, write down ideas or load screen shots into … you will thank me later when ideas are really racing…

If you do this you will see how others are spending time and money on their apps in the app store and you will understand what is working now and how you too can capitalize on it.
